Update (and apology?) |
|
My cards are working now. I received advice from Linksys to install the card(s) in a different PCI slot and let XP auto-install the card. This would use the Windows XP drivers (v4) rather than the ones on the CD shipped with the cards (v5.1) - and it worked! Im still resentful of the hours I wasted faffing around with this installation, but this info may be of use to anyone else running XP. Once installed, I have no complaints at all.

AT the moment, Im spitting feathers so its hard to keep my comments within the bounds Amazon have set. I bought 2 of these cards for my kids computers - Both Compaq Deskpro EPs. On the first one (Windows 98) the drivers installed OK, but the PC wouldnt reboot. On the second (Windows XP) the drivers wouldnt install. So I upgraded the first PC to Windows XP, and the drivers installed but the card didnt work. The included diagnostics said that no card was installed although XP could see it. I contacted Linksys Tech Support but have heard nothing yet. So Im disappointed. Despite being a MCSE with 20 years experience of PCs Im at a loss. Ive installed hundreds of network cards. It should be a 10 minute job, but with these cards ... Well, you might be lucky but Id choose an alternative.

Falling off a log |
There is not much that you need to know, so I will keep it brief.I have a cable modem using USB and wanted to change to an ethernet card. Im not much of a techie, although I can open up my PC without needing Valium. In the box was a guide for idiots like me, so it was all embarrassingly simple: open PC, plug in card, close PC, run installation CD, job done. Painless, stressless, and no problems of any kind since. If only it was always so easy.
